Extreme Makeover: Me Edition – Vacation Strategies

This week Amber at {ae filkins} wants to know about our eating habits while on vacation.  Hmm, interesting topic, isn’t it?

{ae filkins}

Share your vacation survival strategies.  Do you think being on vacation is a free pass to eat whatever you want to eat?

I dealt with a similar situation last week when I had company visiting.  I made plans to take her to several authentic restaurants where it was easier to spot a celebrity than a healthy meal.  If you read my blog, you know she was a no-show for the most part, but I enjoyed the restaurants (night after night) with other friends, and I did my best to  make wise choices.  I also controlled my portions and exercised (though not as much as I do in a regular week.)  And most importantly, I still wrote everything that I ate in my food journal. Some people think its silly, some cannot be bothered to take the time…To each their own, but it works for me because even if I’m eating at a restaurant or having cake at a party, I am accountable for everything I put into my mouth.
At the end of my friend’s visit I did not show a weight loss, but I did not gain either.  And I posted here about how I’ve learned that I don’t have to change my entire routine for a week because I have company.  I won’t do it the same way next time.
I’m heading to the beach for a week later this month, and I will face “vacation challenges” again. But now I feel prepared to handle it and show a loss when I return home. I’ll bring a variety of healthy foods with me, and dine out only a few times.  The biggest problem I see is not having my recumbent bike, but I’ll bring my light weights and walk everyday.
I’ll do my best while I’m gone just as I do when I’m home.  And I will remind myself that I’ve already done some great things, and I’ll look forward to getting back in my regular routine.  I like it like that…I need it like that, at least for the next couple of years.
Wish me luck as I step on the scale tomorrow because I have worked hard this week and hope to see the fruits of my labor. 😉

    Nothing lost but you didn't gain anything… you're doing OK. I wouldn't be able to stick with a food diary, but if that works for you, do it! Good luck and HAVE FUN.
