Pretty Things

It’s not always easy to find pieces that make me feel pretty with a bit of glam, but this dress from Dillards definitely helped me succeed in that this week.  It was the first time in years that I was able to walk into that particular department store and find clothes that fit my body.

As a plus-size girl who likes to feel feminine and, dare I say…pretty, I love shopping for clothing that doesn’t look like everything else in my closet so the neck line and sleeves really appealed to me.  It’s the first dress I’ve considered wearing sans cardigan in as long as I can remember.

Close-up...

While I was out, I also tried on a pair of Jones New York cropped jeans that made me feel completely stylish and adorable!  Now I’m on the search for the perfect swim suit – as perfect as it gets when you’re not satisfied with your body.  Hey, I’m a work in progress, remember? 😉

Making a silly face...I know...

This tankini from Avenue is a few sizes smaller than the last swimsuit I bought last year, and it reminded me that I have come a long way even if I don’t always feel like it. At 50% off, it might just have to be mine soon…

My clothing options have opened up so much since I began losing weight, and it seems to grow a bit more with every pound I lose.  Add another one to the list.  I lost 0.8 this week! And while I’ve always enjoyed buying new clothes, it’s fun to choose clothes that are flattering for my shape as opposed to buying whatever fits!

Do you enjoy shopping for clothes?  Has your view of shopping changed due to weight-loss or weight-gain?

Cute dress! You wear it well 🙂 I used to love shopping, but always ended up wearing stuff that fit, but not flattered. I am going to be on a quest this summer to slowly purge my closet of the old lady unflattering crap and updating with some cute stuff.

PS – I am going to Slimmons tomorrow! You, Heidi and Alexa (My fave blog trinity) have inspired me to give it a shot. I am really excited.

I like that dress. It’s very cute. I wish I could actually wear a dress without feel like a complete phony. I’m a tomboy at heart and I don’t think I’ll every feel good in a dress or even think it looks good on me. I actually HATE shopping. I’m the queen of jeans and t-shirts. I’m interested to see if I will start to enjoy shopping once I’m smaller. We’ll see.

Nice dress. I like the colors and the shape. I used to love to shop for clothes. Well I still love shopping, but since I have reached my highest weight, I am finding that the plus size stores don’t fit the bottom half of me very well. My thighs and calves are very large. All pants are too tight around my calves. This is a huge bummer since I won’t wear dresses or skirts until I lose the majority of my weight. My arms are really large too, so now having trouble finding shirts with the right sleeve length to fit. Hopefully, I can start losing some weight and then the experience will be more enjoyable. In the meantime I will enjoy your fashion show. You look great!

I love to shop, and somehow I always end up spending several hundred dollas on clothes just after payday, usually as I’m making some vow to myself to NOT buy clothes until I can comfortably fit into a size or two smaller.

But I never know when thats going to happen, so I’ve kind of gotten into the habit of buying SOME clothes a size or two too small, so I’ll have something new and cute to wear once it fits. It kind of feels like a game of chicken.

What a great dress! You look awesome in it. 🙂

I still don’t love shopping for clothes, but then I don’t much like shopping. But since reaching goal, it is so much easier to find clothes that fit, look good, and are on sale! I can buy a whole suit for less than I used to pay for one blouse or sweater in a decent plus size store. I do love that!

    CUTE dress!

I know how you feel! I’ve gotten done to a comfortable XL from a 3X which probably should have been a 4x (EEKS!) and I am in LOVE with shopping! I can order online I can go to the “skinny” side of the store instead of the plus side. But I feel so out of place like people are judging me that I shuldnt not be on that side! Of course that is just in my head.

I totally relate to the whole “my shopping experience varies widely depending on my size” thing.

Although, I really like Dillard’s, especially when they’re having a sale. I have found killer deals particularly on more trendy things that hit the clearance rack. I wouldn’t pay full price for them, but with extra percentages off and all that, they’re right in my range.

If you have a Burlington Coat Factory near you, they sometimes have good stuff in larger sizes that’s not quite so grandmotherly. I mean, some if it is kind of pimp-tastic too, but I scored a really cute denim pencil skirt recently in their larger sizes for right around $15. And they have awesome shoe sales too (at least the one near me does.)

very pretty dress. I’m not comfortable with the arm flab I have ( bat wings) hanging with sleeveless things, but I have fallen in love with certain tops that have shorter sleeves and just wear them because I love them. This is a process.

I’m about 222 and wear a XL in “regular sizes” but I still also wear 18 to 20 and sometimes 14/16 at Avenue. But at 345 lbs I wore 4x or 30/32. Ulla popkin or J jill were my favorite places to get clothes from at 4x and I still wear J jill. But I like the vintagey feel of some of the Vintage America line from 9 West =bought at Belks. I’ve enjoyed looking at some of the sites for clothing that you feature. I’m liking shopping for clothes more now.

I was trying desperately to fit into 30/32’s at over 390 pounds…it feels so good to be far, far away from that scenario because I’m not sure where I could have gone from there…coats didn’t fit in snowy winters, one type of jeans, etc. It wasn’t pretty at all…

I don’t enjoy clothes shopping, especially right now as I seem to be inbetween sizes. Nothing fits right, everything looks terrible and I’m really not adventurous when it comes to trying new types of clothing. I’m very much a t-shirt and jeans girl.

I think we all have our body issues no matter our size. It is important to wear what makes you feel good. I have 5 more pounds I would like to lose before going out and doing some serious shopping but in the meantime, I have finally given myself permission to get rid of the clothes that are too big now. I won’t go back and having those things hang in my closet is like voice of doubt telling me I’ll never maintain my weight loss. Besides that, I worked hard to get this body trimmed down and in better shape. Time to show it off with clothes that accentuate rather than hide what I’ve got!
    Thanks for being an inspiration.

Beautiful!! I, too, am discovering new stores and am loving shopping now more than ever! I used to dread it… will they have my size? Will the clothes in my size be “cool” and age appropriate? *sigh* I am now (recently) officially out of the plus size stores and it feels strange… like I’m cheating on Lane Bryant when I go into a “regular” store… I still expect someone to come up to me and tell me I’m in the wrong store. 🙂

I think changing clothes comes with changing how we feel about the woman within. I have worn menswear shirts for as long as I can remember. I wear drab dark coloured mens polo shirts….all the time and just now, on my blog I’m posting about looking to buy prettier, girls things. What I am choosing to wear on the outside is a reflection of how I feel about myself.
    It feels good, doesn’t it.

You definitely have style…no matter what you’re wearing. I noticed that at Fitbloggin 🙂 And I adore asymmetrical neck lines 🙂

I have a very clear memory of the day I realized that I no longer needed to shop in the plus-size department. I was at a major department store and had gone to the plus-size department and was trying stuff on and it was all too big. But there was a part of me that didn’t believe it. I remember feeling like a fraud shopping in the “regular” department (and you know what? I hate calling it that…there needs to be a better name for it). I felt like I didn’t deserve to be there but at the same time I felt great!

These days I don’t allow the size of my clothes to dictate how I feel about myself…I know some styles/brands/cuts run big and some run small. I have clothes in my closet that range from size 8 to size 14 and they all fit! Go figure.

I HATED shopping so much that my mom would buy me clothes for Christmas and my birthday. I’m starting to enjoy shopping now. I can’t do it all day like my mom or friends can but I can walk in a couple of stores and find things I like. My mom thinks I have been abducted by aliens! 🙂

Loving the dress. You look fabulous in it!!

I absolutely HATE shopping for clothes. I’m not only over-weight, but I’m tall. So, it either doesn’t fit around my waist (more like my abdomen) or it isn’t long enough. This makes shopping for pants/jeans nearly impossible. Apparently, clothing manufacturers believe women who are overweight cannot be taller than 5-foot-7 (at most), while women who are taller (I’m a smidge shorter than 6-foot) cannot be a size larger than 14 (at the largest).

In fact, I am going to to a water park next month and I’m feeling totally confident because I know it will stay ON when I go down a slide!
However, when I’m feeling “fat” I tend to go for shoes and accessories instead of actual clothing. Those fit no matter how I feel.

Your dress is beautiful! I love the sleeves and neckline.

My view of clothing shopping has changed in the last month alone. I kept seeing myself still at 250+. I took a really good friend telling me that it was all in my head. Before my summer uniform would be a pair of capris and a solid color shirt. Now I have shorts and tanks in my wardrobe. When I shop, I find myself gravitating towards skirts and dresses. And they are not just bought to hang in the closet, I’m wearing them out for non-special occasions. I also find that I’m buying shirts that look great with a skirt and dressy capris or can be dress down with a pair of shorts or denim capris. For me, shopping is fun again.

It’s so nice to be able to go to a store (any store!) and buy something off of the rack. One more size to go and I won’t be “plus” anymore and I can’t wait!

Kenz the floral dress looks fabulous on you. Is the main color of the dress (dark) navy or black? I can’t really tell from the pics. Please don’t be mad but I’m glad you passed on the suit, I like the sillohuette but the print/color combo is a bit matronly for someone as young and vivacious as you in my opinion. Keep looking, I’m sure you’ll find a great suit or two soon enough. What’s your opinion on keeping ‘fat clothes’ after they no longer fit and are too big to wear. Do you/did you personally hold on to some things or sell/donate/toss them? The reason I ask is because I’m sloooowly shrinking and alot of people say you should toss the ‘fat clothes’ in order to prevent gaining the weight back. I’m just not sure I agree. Some of the clothes in my closet were basically painted on and way beyond tight before I started losing and are just now fitting the way they should which is a good feeling. I love shopping and dream of the day I no longer have to shop at Lane Bryant and/or the The Avenue! One more question: is there a brand of shapewear you recommend? That is, assuming you even wear Spanx type underoos yourself. Thanks for your time.

ps. I always see you in dresses but never pants or jeans. Do you ever ‘dress down’ aside from when you work out? Just wondering.

My view of shopping has completely changed. I’ve seen both ends of the spectrum – a weight loss of 50 lbs, and loving shopping at that point to gaining that weight back and then some.. and HATING shopping and wanting to just stay in sweats and hoodies until I can get back down to a place where I don’t feel like a walking, extremely uncomfortable pig!
