Friend Makin’ Mondays: Have You Ever?

Friend Makin’ Mondays: All About Family

This week’s FMM is coming to you from Colorado! I came out to celebrate my niece’s 7th birthday, and, as always, we had a great time together.

Auntie auntie and h

The theme of her party was the “Wizard of Oz,” so I baked ruby slipper cookies. We played games and ran around in the snow, and I’m already looking forward to seeing them over the summer.

This long weekend was all about family for me, so naturally, FMM is going to be all about family too.

All About Family

1. How many siblings do you have? Tell us about them. I have one sister. She’s a teacher, and she’s married to a cool guy. They have two daughters, who just happen to be my favorite little people in the world.
2. Do you have kids? If so, how many? Nope, but I have two awesome nieces. I adore them!
3. Share one thing you love about each of your parents. My mom would do anything for me, and she requires nothing in return…ever. Dad and I don’t always agree politically, but it’s a lot of fun to talk about it with them.
4. How close do you live to your nearest relative? I live about an hour and a half from my mom, which is awesome.
5. Does your family have any particular traditions that you’d hate to miss? If so, what are they? I just enjoy being around my family, so I take every opportunity I can to spend time with them.
6. Share an odd fact about your childhood. When I was really young we lived in Louisiana, but I didn’t grow up there. We traveled across Lake Pontchartrain to visit family, and for a while I had a recurring dream about trees quickly growing up from the water and snakes dangling from them. I also thought the lake was loaded with sharks.
7. Did you have pets when you were growing up? Do you have any now? If so, tell us about them. I had kittens, and I even had a dog once as a kid. I’d love to have another cocker spaniel, but my home and lifestyle just aren’t conducive to it. Many people around me do it, but I plan to wait until I no longer live in a high-rise building.

Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions! Don’t forget to come back and leave your link in the comments!

Happy Monday!

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Spring is Here

It was nice to reconnect with a few old friends last week, and it was also fun to connect with a couple of new people. That’s what I love about Friend Makin’ Mondays, and I hope you guys will hang with me as we continue to grow together again.

Spring is Here

  1. What city do you currently live in? New Orleans, LA
  2. What’s the weather like where you are? It’s perfect right now. Of course it could always rain tomorrow. 😉 Seriously though, it’s been gorgeous (70’s and breezy.) I wish it was this beautiful all year!
  3. When you eat at a restaurant do you prefer to eat inside or outside? At this time of year I don’t mind eating outside, but when it gets hotter I usually prefer the a/c.
  4. What is your favorite season? It was always Winter until I moved to New Orleans. Now I think early Spring is my favorite here (even though I still love Winter most.)
  5. When you go on vacation do you prefer the beach or the mountains? It depends. I always love a beach vacation, but I love spending time with my family at their home in the Rockies.
  6. What do you like most about Spring? The beautiful temperatures, blue skies and baseball season. I loved baseball more before I lived in New Orleans too, but I still catch a game here and there.
  7. Share one of the greatest moments of Spring from your childhood. When I was 5 years old (maybe younger) I found the golden egg at an Easter egg hunt, and I still have the trophy I won. Ha
  8. Do you prefer to wear shorts, capris or dresses at this time of year? Or do you prefer something else? This lady does not wear shorts. I wouldn’t be opposed to some brightly colored bermudas if I could find them, but I’m most comfortable in dresses. They make me look put together, and they’re usually comfortable too.
  9. What do you miss about Winter? Snow…We don’t really have Winter here in New Orleans, but I travel enough that I get to enjoy snow from time to time.
  10. What do you look forward to about Summer? Swimming!

Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions! Don’t forget to come back and share you link in the comments! Also remember to take a few minutes to comment on posts that others share.

Happy Monday, Friends!

Friend Makin’ Mondays: The Basics

Once upon a time I hosted a weekly blog party called “Friend Makin’ Mondays.” The idea was to get to know each other and support each other by reading and commenting on our posts. Does anyone reading now remember when we did this?

It’s been a long time since my blog was an everyday place for me, but I miss those connections. I  miss the friends I made in the blogosphere, so I’m going to bring it back for a while. If you want to join, just copy and paste the next paragraph along with the questions and answers, then link back here so we can all connect.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. Friend Makin’ Mondays: The Basics

  1. How often do you make your bed? I make it everyday as a general rule. I do make exceptions  a few times a year, usually when I’m not feeling well.
  2. What are you currently reading? Well, there are a few books on my iPad that I keep meaning to read, but I do read the Bible most days. I read through it last year, and I’m doing it again. I like reading it because it familiarizes me with God’s character over and over.
  3. Do you go to bed at a certain time? If so, what time? I’ve gotten pretty good at going to bed around midnight, and some nights I sleep even earlier than that. That’s a huge accomplishment for this recovering night owl.
  4. What are your favorite TV shows currently? Suits is still one of my favorites. I also love Younger on TV Land. I still watch Scandal, but I find myself wondering why each week.
  5. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve eaten lately? I guess I’d have to say crawfish. It’s not considered weird here in New Orleans, but it’s not common in the other places I’ve lived.
  6. Do you have any trips planned? If so, where are you going next? My next trip will probably be to Colorado. It’s been several months since I was last there, and I miss my family big time! I also have a few local-ish trips in the works. The next one will probably be Pensacola.
  7. How many cups of coffee do you drink per day? If you’re not a coffee drinker, what you do prefer? I’ve never been a morning coffee drinker, but I started drinking a cup or two a day when I arrived at work. I went a few weeks without drinking it at all, but I had one big cup of iced coffee over the weekend. I got a punch card at Dunkin’ Donuts that gives me a free coffee every Monday in April, so who am I kidding? I’m totally having it today too.
  8. It’s Saturday night, and you decided to stay in? What do you do to entertain yourself? (We’re talking hobbies, interests, etc.) If I’m alone I like to spend that time reading, singing and/or painting my nails. I did those things over the weekend.
  9. When you give a gift do you wrap it, or do you put it in a gift bag? I typically gift wrap. I l only bag if I’m in a hurry because bagging it makes it look like you were in a hurry. To each their own, but for me, no…just no…
  10. Share one thing from last week that made you smile? I could list several different things here, but I’ll share one about my boss. He couldn’t be more handsome and charming, and after lunch with my colleagues I had to walk to my car in the rain. My umbrella had broken on my way in, and he knew it. On our way out he walked me to go my car, and he got soaked so I’d stay dry under his umbrella. He’s a great boss, but moments like that remind me that he’s also a just a great person.

Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions. Don’t forget to come back and link up in the comments. Let’s see if we can get this going again because I’d love to have blogs to read and friends to catch up with in the blogosphere again.

Until next week…

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Changes

One thing that I love about blogging is the community of people who come together as a result of it, and Friend Makin’ Mondays is an incredible example of that.

wpid-friend-makin-monday-for-post3-300x179

I’ve hosted it for years, but lately I’ve been off the blog scene.  I have been “distracted” by the events of my life – school, relationships, church, etc., and my blog has “suffered” for it.

There’s so much that I’d like to say, but I don’t take the time to do it because I’m usually doing something that makes me happier than writing about how things are or how I wish they were.  I feel satisfied and content in spite of my imperfect life, and I’m just not sure that I’m feeling the need for approval or as open to judgment as I once was.

I’d still love to do FMM each week, but coming up with questions for the last few years has taken its toll so I’ve asked my good friend, Sarah, to host it for the next month.  She blogs at www.losingweightandhavingfun.com. and she’s already a seasoned FMM-er!

She’s been an incredible friend to me, and you’ll adore her soon if you don’t already.  She will host FMM for the next four weeks so take a moment to check out her website for the questions and to link up in the comments just like you would here.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: www.losingweightandhavingfun.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts.

I’ll come back to post the questions and answers here too…Until then….

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Random Questions

I can’t believe that it’s already Monday again.  It’s also February, and that just doesn’t seem possible.

I didn’t post FMM last week, and I am thinking about asking a trusted friend to take it over for the next few months.  Would you still participate if it was hosted by someone else?

wpid-friend-makin-monday-for-post3-300x179

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. 5. How many hours did you sleep last night?  5 or so.

6. What is your favorite day of the week?  Hmmm, I’d have to say Sundays. Yesterday was absolutely amazing from start to finish.  Church was incredible, which really set the tone for the rest of my day.  I was surround by people who matter to me, and that always makes me feel good too.

7. If you had to choose between riding a bike or swimming, which would you choose?  I suppose it depends on the day, but generally, I think I’d pick swimming.  I absolutely love it.

9. What time did you wake up this morning?  6:30, and now I’m sleepy!

10. Do you have any goals for the week?  Last week my goal was to exercise consistently, and I plan to continue that this week as well.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Quick and Easy Questions

Quick and Easy Questions

6. Do you drink coffee?  I drink it a couple of times per week, but sometimes I go weeks without it.

7.  Will you watch the Superbowl?  I usually do, but it’s not in my neighborhood this year so it won’t be as exciting as last year. 🙂

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Taboo Topics

After over a week of traveling, I’m finally heading home tomorrow.  I’ve been pretty disconnected from the internet because I’ve been in Oklahoma, and while Dad finally has WiFi at his house, I haven’t spent a lot of time using it.  I’ve been seeing old friends, making new ones and relaxing.  It’s nice to retreat at times, but I’m ready to get back to business.

School starts again today, but I won’t attend my first class until Thursday.  The professor is brilliant and handsome and really nice to me, and I can’t think of a better reason to take a class.  Can you? 😉

wpid-friend-makin-monday-for-post3-300x179

Anyway, being off the grid lately has put me in the mood to stir some things up so this week’s FMM is all about taboo topics. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

Taboo Topics

1. Are you a registered voter?  Definitely.

2. Do you believe in GOD?  Definitely.  I haven’t always said that, but it’s true now more than ever.

3. How has your readership changed since you first began blogging?  When I started blogging, no one read it, then lots of people read it.  Now people aren’t nearly as interested as they used to be, but I can’t blame them.  I guess the short answer is that it has been fluid.

4.  If you could choose between a serious relationship or $100,000, which would you choose?  I’d choose the relationship IF it could be with the man I’m currently picturing in my head.  Otherwise, I’d take the cash…

5. Have you ever changed political parties?  Officially, no…I am registered in the way that I’ve always been registered, but my views are much more bipartisan than they were 10 years ago.

6.  If you were put in a position in which you had to be in a room with someone that you can’t stand, how would you handle the situation? Hmm, I suppose I’d try to focus on the positive people and things around me to drown out the negativity.

7.  Do you ever eat in secret because you don’t want anyone to see what you consume?  It’s not something that I usually do, but I’ve done it.  Right now, I’m sitting in a crowded restaurant as I eat lunch and blog, and I don’t think anyone cares what I’m eating.  On the other hand, last week I ate another serving of sugar laden cereal that I probably wouldn’t have eaten if I had been eating breakfast with someone.

8.  Do you use curse words in your daily conversations?  I do say them, though I don’t use them as much as I used to.  I like them, and in my mind, words aren’t bad.  The feelings behind the words have the potential to be harmful, but I’m not convinced that the words themselves are bad.  That said, I try to be respectful of everyone, and cursing isn’t always appropriate.

9.  How much do you tip when you’ve had decent service at a restaurant?  If the service isn’t bad, I typically just double the tax.  If it’s exceptional, I leave more, which varies.

10.  How do you respond when someone confronts you?  I’m not a fan of yelling.  I don’t do it, and I don’t respond well to it.  When I’m in situations that suck, I try to respond instead of react.  I stand up for myself, but it’s usually easiest to just walk away.  If people don’t exhibit respect and graciousness, I typically don’t waste my time with them.

Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions.  Don’t forget to come back and link up in the comments.  Happy Monday!

Friend Makin’ Mondays is Back!

I’ve been quiet over the last few weeks because I needed some time.  With the new year approaching, I found myself considering making some changes.  I thought strongly about changing the name of my blog.  I also considered ending things here, but I love it too much to let it go.  Perhaps I’ll make some changes in its appearance soon, but it looks like I’ll be here indefinitely so it’s time to get back to one of my favorite parts of blogging – Friend Makin’ Mondays.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. Friend Makin’ Mondays

1.  What has been your happiest moment in 2014 so far?  New Years Eve, which turned into the wee hours of New Years morning, was one of my favorite days in recent memory.  I had a carefree time with people who matter to me.

2. Share the last compliment you received.  I received a lot of compliments on my voice today at lunch.

3.  What is one thing that you plan to accomplish in the next week? I plan to swim at least a few miles this week.  It’s my favorite workout to do in Oklahoma.  (By the way, I’m in Oklahoma.)

4.  What is your favorite TV show currently on air? Scandal

5.  If you could go anywhere in the world free for the next two weeks, where you go?  Hmm, that’s a tough question because I want to see so many places, but I think I’d go to Prague.  I’d love to visit Karlovy Vary.

6.  Describe a significant event in your life that caused you to change your values system.  I met GOD…I mean, I knew him, but I didn’t have a relationship with Him until last year.

7.  What made you decide to live where you currently live?  I didn’t really know where to go when I left New York.  I tried Los Angeles, but I ended up moving to New Orleans because Mom was there.  She lives an hour and a half away, and it’s nice to see her whenever I want to.

8.  What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about GOD? I think about all of the grace that He has offered me even though I’m so undeserving.

9.  If you could have a long conversation with someone famous (and alive now) who would you choose?  Anderson Cooper, of course.  It’s been a while since I’ve mentioned him on my blog, but he’s still my favorite.

10.  List three things that you’re thankful for today.

  • Spending time with Dad, Aunt Janice and Barbara, as well as one of my awesome friends.
  • The snow that fell last night while I was cozy and asleep
  • The brilliant and friendly server who made me feel totally special at lunch today.

Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions on your blog.  Don’t forget to come back and link up in the comments.  I’ve been gone for a while, but I hope that you all will welcome me back into your blogging world.  Happy Monday, and Happy New Year!

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Share Your Favorite Holiday Recipe

It’s finals week at school, but if we’re friends on social media, you might know that I’ve made some time to bake some Christmas goodies.  I baked for a little party that I had over the weekend, and I also made other sweet treats to mail to friends along with their Christmas cards today.

Christmas Sugar Cookies

In addition to cookies, I made some candied pecans and pecan pralines because they’re tasty and easy to mail.

Kenlie New Orleans Pralines

This week I want to do something different.  Instead of asking lots of questions, I’d love to exchange tasty holiday recipes.  If you’re not savvy in the kitchen, share something (or a few things) that you’d want to eat.

Wilton Roll-Out Sugar Cookies

1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsn. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream butter and sugar then add egg and mix. Add remaining ingredients and mix until smooth. Refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours (I prefer four or more hours.)

Roll out the dough about 1/8 in. thick on lightly floured surface, dip cutters in flour before each use. Place cookies on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 12 – 15 minutes until golden. Place on cooling rack for 5 minutes before removing from sheet then cool completely. Makes 24-30 cookies. Ice as desired.

Note:  I usually lay out foil all over the counter so when I’m done with the flour and stuff, all I have to do it carefully roll up the foil so I don’t have a huge mess.  I also usually double this recipe when I’m making it.  I don’t do that with many recipes, but it’s fine for this one.

Shiny Royal Icing

1/4 c warm water

1 tbsp light corn syrup

3 c powdered sugar (more, if needed)

Stir warm water, corn syrup, and almond extract together in a small bowl until corn syrup and extract have dissolved. Place confectioners’ sugar into a separate bowl and add liquid ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed until royal icing is smooth.

Note:  If you want to outline the cookies (which I highly recommend even though I didn’t do it with these) just add powdered sugar until it’s thick enough to firm up nicely.  I usually just eyeball that.  Let it dry a little before flooding (filling in) the cookie.
