Friend Makin’ Mondays: Changes

One thing that I love about blogging is the community of people who come together as a result of it, and Friend Makin’ Mondays is an incredible example of that.

wpid-friend-makin-monday-for-post3-300x179

I’ve hosted it for years, but lately I’ve been off the blog scene.  I have been “distracted” by the events of my life – school, relationships, church, etc., and my blog has “suffered” for it.

There’s so much that I’d like to say, but I don’t take the time to do it because I’m usually doing something that makes me happier than writing about how things are or how I wish they were.  I feel satisfied and content in spite of my imperfect life, and I’m just not sure that I’m feeling the need for approval or as open to judgment as I once was.

I’d still love to do FMM each week, but coming up with questions for the last few years has taken its toll so I’ve asked my good friend, Sarah, to host it for the next month.  She blogs at www.losingweightandhavingfun.com. and she’s already a seasoned FMM-er!

She’s been an incredible friend to me, and you’ll adore her soon if you don’t already.  She will host FMM for the next four weeks so take a moment to check out her website for the questions and to link up in the comments just like you would here.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: www.losingweightandhavingfun.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts.

I’ll come back to post the questions and answers here too…Until then….

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Random Questions

I can’t believe that it’s already Monday again.  It’s also February, and that just doesn’t seem possible.

I didn’t post FMM last week, and I am thinking about asking a trusted friend to take it over for the next few months.  Would you still participate if it was hosted by someone else?

6. What is your favorite day of the week?  Hmmm, I’d have to say Sundays. Yesterday was absolutely amazing from start to finish.  Church was incredible, which really set the tone for the rest of my day.  I was surround by people who matter to me, and that always makes me feel good too.

7. If you had to choose between riding a bike or swimming, which would you choose?  I suppose it depends on the day, but generally, I think I’d pick swimming.  I absolutely love it.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Taboo Topics

After over a week of traveling, I’m finally heading home tomorrow.  I’ve been pretty disconnected from the internet because I’ve been in Oklahoma, and while Dad finally has WiFi at his house, I haven’t spent a lot of time using it.  I’ve been seeing old friends, making new ones and relaxing.  It’s nice to retreat at times, but I’m ready to get back to business.

School starts again today, but I won’t attend my first class until Thursday.  The professor is brilliant and handsome and really nice to me, and I can’t think of a better reason to take a class.  Can you? ;)

wpid-friend-makin-monday-for-post3-300x179

Anyway, being off the grid lately has put me in the mood to stir some things up so this week’s FMM is all about taboo topics.  If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

Taboo Topics

1. Are you a registered voter?  Definitely.

2. Do you believe in GOD?  Definitely.  I haven’t always said that, but it’s true now more than ever.

3. How has your readership changed since you first began blogging?  When I started blogging, no one read it, then lots of people read it.  Now people aren’t nearly as interested as they used to be, but I can’t blame them.  I guess the short answer is that it has been fluid.

4.  If you could choose between a serious relationship or $100,000, which would you choose?  I’d choose the relationship IF it could be with the man I’m currently picturing in my head.  Otherwise, I’d take the cash…

5. Have you ever changed political parties?  Officially, no…I am registered in the way that I’ve always been registered, but my views are much more bipartisan than they were 10 years ago.

6.  If you were put in a position in which you had to be in a room with someone that you can’t stand, how would you handle the situation? Hmm, I suppose I’d try to focus on the positive people and things around me to drown out the negativity.

7.  Do you ever eat in secret because you don’t want anyone to see what you consume?  It’s not something that I usually do, but I’ve done it.  Right now, I’m sitting in a crowded restaurant as I eat lunch and blog, and I don’t think anyone cares what I’m eating.  On the other hand, last week I ate another serving of sugar laden cereal that I probably wouldn’t have eaten if I had been eating breakfast with someone.

8.  Do you use curse words in your daily conversations?  I do say them, though I don’t use them as much as I used to.  I like them, and in my mind, words aren’t bad.  The feelings behind the words have the potential to be harmful, but I’m not convinced that the words themselves are bad.  That said, I try to be respectful of everyone, and cursing isn’t always appropriate.

9.  How much do you tip when you’ve had decent service at a restaurant?  If the service isn’t bad, I typically just double the tax.  If it’s exceptional, I leave more, which varies.

10.  How do you respond when someone confronts you?  I’m not a fan of yelling.  I don’t do it, and I don’t respond well to it.  When I’m in situations that suck, I try to respond instead of react.  I stand up for myself, but it’s usually easiest to just walk away.  If people don’t exhibit respect and graciousness, I typically don’t waste my time with them.

Friend Makin’ Mondays is Back!

I’ve been quiet over the last few weeks because I needed some time.  With the new year approaching, I found myself considering making some changes.  I thought strongly about changing the name of my blog.  I also considered ending things here, but I love it too much to let it go.  Perhaps I’ll make some changes in its appearance soon, but it looks like I’ll be here indefinitely so it’s time to get back to one of my favorite parts of blogging – Friend Makin’ Mondays.

Friend Makin’ Mondays

1.  What has been your happiest moment in 2014 so far?  New Years Eve, which turned into the wee hours of New Years morning, was one of my favorite days in recent memory.  I had a carefree time with people who matter to me.

2. Share the last compliment you received.  I received a lot of compliments on my voice today at lunch.

3.  What is one thing that you plan to accomplish in the next week? I plan to swim at least a few miles this week.  It’s my favorite workout to do in Oklahoma.  (By the way, I’m in Oklahoma.)

4.  What is your favorite TV show currently on air? Scandal

5.  If you could go anywhere in the world free for the next two weeks, where you go?  Hmm, that’s a tough question because I want to see so many places, but I think I’d go to Prague.  I’d love to visit Karlovy Vary.

6.  Describe a significant event in your life that caused you to change your values system.  I met GOD…I mean, I knew him, but I didn’t have a relationship with Him until last year.

7.  What made you decide to live where you currently live?  I didn’t really know where to go when I left New York.  I tried Los Angeles, but I ended up moving to New Orleans because Mom was there.  She lives an hour and a half away, and it’s nice to see her whenever I want to.

8.  What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about GOD? I think about all of the grace that He has offered me even though I’m so undeserving.

9.  If you could have a long conversation with someone famous (and alive now) who would you choose?  Anderson Cooper, of course.  It’s been a while since I’ve mentioned him on my blog, but he’s still my favorite.

10.  List three things that you’re thankful for today.

  • Spending time with Dad, Aunt Janice and Barbara, as well as one of my awesome friends.
  • The snow that fell last night while I was cozy and asleep
  • The brilliant and friendly server who made me feel totally special at lunch today.

Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions on your blog.  Don’t forget to come back and link up in the comments.  I’ve been gone for a while, but I hope that you all will welcome me back into your blogging world.  Happy Monday, and Happy New Year!

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Share Your Favorite Holiday Recipe

It’s finals week at school, but if we’re friends on social media, you might know that I’ve made some time to bake some Christmas goodies.  I baked for a little party that I had over the weekend, and I also made other sweet treats to mail to friends along with their Christmas cards today.

Christmas Sugar Cookies

In addition to cookies, I made some candied pecans and pecan pralines because they’re tasty and easy to mail.

Kenlie New Orleans Pralines

This week I want to do something different.  Instead of asking lots of questions, I’d love to exchange tasty holiday recipes.  If you’re not savvy in the kitchen, share something (or a few things) that you’d want to eat.

Share Your Favorite Holiday Recipe

Wilton Roll-Out Sugar Cookies

1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsn. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream butter and sugar then add egg and mix. Add remaining ingredients and mix until smooth. Refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours (I prefer four or more hours.)

Roll out the dough about 1/8 in. thick on lightly floured surface, dip cutters in flour before each use. Place cookies on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 12 – 15 minutes until golden. Place on cooling rack for 5 minutes before removing from sheet then cool completely. Makes 24-30 cookies. Ice as desired.

Note:  I usually lay out foil all over the counter so when I’m done with the flour and stuff, all I have to do it carefully roll up the foil so I don’t have a huge mess.  I also usually double this recipe when I’m making it.  I don’t do that with many recipes, but it’s fine for this one.

Shiny Royal Icing

1/4 c warm water

1 tbsp light corn syrup

3 c powdered sugar (more, if needed)

Stir warm water, corn syrup, and almond extract together in a small bowl until corn syrup and extract have dissolved. Place confectioners’ sugar into a separate bowl and add liquid ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed until royal icing is smooth.

Note:  If you want to outline the cookies (which I highly recommend even though I didn’t do it with these) just add powdered sugar until it’s thick enough to firm up nicely.  I usually just eyeball that.  Let it dry a little before flooding (filling in) the cookie.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: The Holidays and More: Part 2

It’s Monday again, and I’m still in holiday mode. (Is anyone surprised by this?)  I’m currently writing this post as I look at Pike’s Peak in Colorado Springs, and there’s snow on the ground.  Add a hot cup of java, and it’s everything I need to feel ready for the holidays.  I know we talked about the holidays last week, but most of you seemed to enjoy it so I’ll throw a few holiday questions in this week too.

The Holidays and More: Part 2

1.  What state/country do you live in?  New Orleans, LA in the USA

2.  Where were you born?  Were you raised there?  I was actually born about an hour and a half away from where I live now, but I didn’t grow up here.  I lived in Texas, Oklahoma, New York and a few other states in between.

3.  How do you feel about stores like Wal-mart opening on Thanksgiving Day for pre-Black Friday sales?  Will you participate?  I think it’s horrible.  As a capitalist, I believe in the free market, but as individuals, I think we should collectively refrain from Thanksgiving Day shopping so that employees can enjoy the holiday with their loved ones.  That said, consumerism is alive.  I just won’t be a part of it…until Friday.

4.  Have you ever participated in a Turkey Trot?  Will you do one this year?  I’ve never been part of an official one, but I’ve walked a 5k or more on Thanksgiving every year for the last few years.  I plan to do one this year too.

5.  What was your favorite toy as a child?  I loved my Cabbage Patch kid whose name was Jimmy Swaggart.  (No, I’m not kidding…sadly. Ha.) I also loved to play Barbies with my sister.  As a teen, I loved my roller skates.

6.  Will you count points/calories on Thanksgiving Day?  I’m always aware of how much I eat (even when it’s too much.)  I won’t eat everything that I see on Thanksgiving, but I won’t count the points too closely either.  (I should.  I know I should…I’m just being honest about it.)

7.  Will you watch football Thursday?  I’m sure I’ll catch a little since it will, no doubt, be on, but I’ll probably watch Christmas movies with Mom while we decorate the tree.

8.  Do you decorate inside/outside of your home for the holidays?  I decorate a little inside, but I live in a historic high-rise.  I’m guessing that since I can’t have direct TV, I probably can’t having lights. ;)  I’d also have to scale the building to do it so I’m thinking it’s just a bad idea all-around.

9.  Do you have allergies that prevent you from eating traditional holiday meals? Nope…It might not be a bad idea for me to be allergic to pecan pie, but I’m not.  I’ll just have to pace myself, as one small slice is nearly 400 calories.

10.  Is it snowing where you live?  No way.  I am currently in Colorado as I mentioned earlier in this post.  It’s snowing here, but it’s definitely not snowing in New Orleans.  It’s supposed to be chilly this week though.

Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions.  Don’t forget to come back and link up in the comments.  We had some new FMM-ers last week so let’s be sure to make them feel welcome this week!  Happy Monday, friends!

Friend Makin’ Mondays: What If?

Today was one of those days in which I was reminded how incredibly blessed I am.  After living in downtown New Orleans for a year and looking at the Superdome through my windows everyday, I attended my first New Orleans Saints game, and it was amazing!

New Orleans Saints

My friend who invited me had tickets in a suite so we enjoyed the game in style.  :)  There was an endless buffet of food and drinks and fancy people, and I enjoyed sushi and drinks.  It was so much fun to watch the game live, and doing it with friends make it even more fun.

Saints New Orleans

After the game I walked home to meet friends for an afternoon of fun.  Both friends who joined me at my place are incredibly talented so we sang songs all afternoon, talked and ate sushi.  When they left I ran downstairs to hop in Clint’s car, and we spent a little time together.

Anyway, it was a lovely day, and I am so thankful for the people in my world who make it so fun and exciting.  I know it’s Monday so I’ll stop gushing and get going with FMM, but I just had to take a moment to think about how thankful I am.

 What If?

1.  If you had something in your teeth would you want someone to tell you, or would you prefer to figure it out on your own?  Please tell me!

2.  If you had to listen to one song on repeat all day today, which song would you choose?  I’d listen to Everlong by the Foo Fighters.

3.  If you could trade places with someone famous, with whom would you trade?  Hmmmm, either Carrie Underwood or Wolf Blitzer.

4.  If you could speak another language fluently, which one would you speak?  Spanish

5.  If you could read one person’s mind right now whose would you choose?  Hmmm, no comment.

6. If you were forced to go back in time, which period of your life would you choose?  I’m all about moving forward, and I love life today.  If I had to go back, I’d definitely choose my time in New York.  I’d enjoy a lot of the same things, but I’d do some things differently too.

7.  If you had to be trapped in a TV show for a month, which show would you choose?  Drop Dead Diva, of course.

8.  If you had to give up twitter or Facebook, which would you choose?  That’s difficult, but I’m inclined to think I’d give up twitter because I have so many pictures on Facebook.  Thankfully, I don’t have to choose!

9.  If you could have a present today, what would you want?  A new iPad, of course…

10.  If you had to choose between celebrating Halloween or Christmas, which would you choose?  Forget Halloween!  I love Christmas!

Friend Makin’ Mondays: A New Season

It’s Monday again, and it is starting to feel like Fall in New Orleans.  We don’t have any snow in the forecast, of course, but the weather is certainly nicer than it has been in months.  I needed a sweater to sit on my rooftop over the weekend, and that makes me feel good!

A New Season

1.  What is your favorite thing about Fall?  I love the cooler weather.  It makes me want to get cozy!   I love needing long sleeves without needing a heavy coat. :)

2.  It’s not Fall until…I can wear a sweater, and it’s dark before dinner.

3.  Apple cider or hot chocolate?  Both…it depends on my mood.

4.  Share a happy Fall memory.  Football games with friends in high school tops my list of fond Fall memories.

5.  Do you have any hobbies that are seasonally specific? If so, what are they?  I like a variety of crafting, but I love to knit in the fall and winter.  I like to make wreaths for every season too! :)

6.  What do you miss most about Summer now that it’s officially over?  Swimming outside!

7. Do you prefer pumpkin pie or pecan pie?  Um, I prefer both.  (We all knew that, didn’t we?)

8.  Do you suffer from allergies?  Thankfully, no…

9.  How do you celebrate Halloween?  Eh, I’ve never been a big fan of that particular holiday, but I’m sure I’ll go to a party or two…

10.  What is the biggest change that you expect to experience during this season?  My sister is due to have a baby in a couple of weeks so I’ll have a niece!  :)

Friend Makin’ Mondays: All About the Blog

I’ve been silent so much lately, but I don’t want to miss FMM.  I hope some of you feel the same way.  I think last week’s topic isolated a lot of FMM-ers who are already in committed relationships so this week we’ll answer some questions that I think will work for all of us.  We are all bloggers, after all.  :)

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. All about the Blog

1.  How long have you been blogging?  Almost a decade…Whoa!  I’ve been writing here  for over four years, but I blogged about other things before starting this blog.

2.  What is the overwhelming theme of your blog? When I started it, it was definitely weight-loss based.  Now I’m looking for new direction and thinking of changing my domain name even though I still haven’t finished reaching my weight-loss goal.  Any suggestions?

3.  Have you connected with people in person after meeting them through blogging?  Oh yes…I’ve been lucky to meet so many incredible people, and over the weekend, I got to see my friend, Dacia.  We first met at Fitbloggin in Portland. She came to New Orleans, and I got to see her since I didn’t make it to California.  More on that later…

Dacia and Kenlie New Orleans

4.  What do you enjoy most about blogging?  See #3.  Seriously, I love connecting with people from around the world who understand my struggles and my ups and downs….It makes me feel like I’m not alone in striving for a stronger, healthier, happier life.

5.  How often do you blog? I used to blog every weekday, but I’ve been pretty quiet lately.  I think it’s a combination of my busy everyday schedule and not feeling like I have anything to contribute.  The thing is…when I started blogging, I did it for myself.  I think I need to remind myself that it’s okay to write what I want to write, when I want to write it.

6.  Share one thing that you don’t like about blogging. I don’t care for the insensitive, judgmental types that thinks the internet gives them license to say things that they likely would not say to my face.

7.  Do you talk about your blog in everyday life?  Yes.  I used to talk about it much more because for a long time it was the most important aspect of my life.  It was my window to the world, and it still is.  I just have lots of windows in my proverbial house now. I don’t need the level of attention that I used to need either.  (Come on, you know what I’m talking about, right?  There’s no way that I’m the only one.)

8.  What is the coolest and most unexpected thing that has happened to you as a result of blogging?  My voice has been heard around the world, and I’ve received letters from many different countries across the globe about people and their journeys.  It is truly amazing.

9.  Are there topics that are off-limits on your blog?  If so, name a few…I don’t go into much detail about my childhood, though it isn’t really off-limits as a whole or anything.  I have also backed off from discussing relationships, but that could change at some point.

10.  If you could accomplish one thing through your blog before the end of this year, what would you want to accomplish?  I’d want to encourage at least one person who needs it for whatever reason.

Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions!  Don’t forget to come back and link up in the comments, and say hello to someone new!  Happy Monday, my friends…..xoxo
