EatSmart Makes Eating Smart Easy

I’ve been feeling good about my workouts lately, and I’ve been doing well with my food intake too.  I can still improve a lot, but I feel like I’m finding my way back to a healthy track.

I’m making an effort to eat at home more often because it’s easier to make good choices when I do.  I weigh and measure everything at home, and I want you to be able to do it too which leads me to today’s topic.

My new EatSmart food scale is amazing.  I love every EatSmart product that I own, but this scale is particularly awesome because it’s easy to use, easy to read and the platform for measurement is much bigger than any other food scale I’ve ever owned.  My favorite thing about this scale is its giant, lighted display, but I also appreciate how easy it is to make note of exactly what I’m consuming.

When I eat a giant salad I like a little salad dressing, but it’s easy to eat more of it than we realize we’re eating so I place my salad on the scale, and I measure one serving of dressing.  It is a lot more precise than using a spoon, or eyeballing it.

salad dressing

It looks nice on my counter too so it’s already ready to use when I’m ready to measure.  When it’s easy to do it, we’re more likely to make good choices.  I’m not the only one who feels this way, right?

If you want a chance to win, here’s what you have to do.

Giving Away One of my New Favorites Today

I love to hit the gym, but there are times in which it’s just easier or more appealing to workout at home.  And if you know me, you know that I adore Richard Simmons and his workout DVD’s, but sometimes it’s fun to mix things up.  And after meeting Nicole from Spark People last year, I was excited to try her new 28-Day Boot Camp workout DVD.

Coach Nicole and Me at IDEA in LA...

And I love this picture too much not to include it because my lovely friend, Leslie, is standing next to me. =)

Back to the DVD…The 28-Day Boot Camp DVD is excellent for people at any fitness level, and I love it because combining strength and cardio always makes me feel athletic (even when I have to modify the exercises.)  And over the last month, I’ve been reminded that it’s so important to feel good about what you’re doing and that confidence plays a huge role in success.  And I also like that I can burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time.  You can workout for 10 minutes, 30 minutes or whatever you feel like doing, but you’ll definitely feel the burn.

Do you want to try the DVD?  You can buy it online or at your local Target, but Nicole is going to give one away to one of my readers too.  If you’d like to win it, leave a comment telling me that you want to win.  You can also follow @thecoachnicole on twitter for an additional entry.  Tell her @alltheweigh says hi! =)

Nicole is awesome, Sparkpeople is awesome and her DVD is awesome too so check it out.  And don’t forget to enter to win your own copy!  The winner will be chosen Monday at 9pm central time.  Good luck friends!  Let’s get fit together!

*All opinions in this post are mine, and I have not been paid to endorse this product. Nicole from Sparkpeople will provide the DVD to one winner. The winner will have 48 hours to respond from the time the e-mail is sent.  Resident must be 18 years or older and live in the US.

Several Things

I had already mentioned that I’d be skipping this week’s WW meeting and weigh-in Thursday night, and I did.  Instead, I visited my uncle and ate dinner with my aunts.  And, so far,  this week has been an uphill battle to erase the damage I’ve done in the way of overeating.  I ate more than normal last week and didn’t exercise though I’m cleared so I’m exercising again.  Did I mention that I joined Anytime Fitness?  It’s official, and I now have the little key fob to prove it.  I love the freedom of working out at any time of day, at any location 365 days a year.  I definitely made the right choice for me, and it has been awesome to hear that some of you have done the same thing.

Yesterday, I started my workout on the elliptical before moving to weights and according to my stats, I finished just shy of climbing the height Empire State Building twice!  Thanks to my friend, Anne, for the skyscraper motivation!  Now I want to tackle some other skyscapers like my skyscraper climbin’ friend, KeepitUpDavid.  Check out his Stairmaster/Skyscraper logs if you feel like being blown away.

The Empire State Building is 1,250 feet which means I climbed the length of it (almost) twice.

My stomach still hurts even after a week off, but it’s much better.  And I’m aware that the only way to avoid this pain in the future is to continue losing weight so it’s back to the gym for me.  If you want to know why my stomach hurts, you can click here for the details.  That being said, I took your advice and felt a lot better yesterday.  We’ll see if I can say the same today!  Please cross your fingers for me!

I didn’t see Uncle Wesley yesterday, but he’s back at home where Hospice has joined him.  Yes, I know what that means, and I have mixed feelings about it.  But he’s happy to be home so I’m happy for him.  According to Mom, he was weaker than the day before when I saw him in the hospital.  He was smiling and happy and alert when I arrived, and his whole day was filled with family and happy memories.  Going home took a lot out of him, and between company and family and Hospice, it’s easy to understand why he was tired.  I’ll see him later today before spending the evening in Metairie, my favorite suburb of New Orleans while waiting to pick up my cousin Sarah at the airport.  Does anyone want to join me for coffee or dinner? 🙂

This was a long week filled with work, phone meetings, dates with a tall, intelligent guy (who may or may not ask me out again..we’ll see)  and my family so I’m happy that it’s winding down.  I ate well and exercised hard.  I  made a big decision about my future that I’ll share soon, and I’m feeling pretty good.  But I’m still lamenting the end of baseball season as I know it.  My Bronx Bombers are done so baseball won’t matter to me again until next season.  Check out this picture of my future husband, Derek Jeter, taken by Jimmy Fallon at Thursday night’s game.  Don’t you love Jimmy Fallon?!  I do! =)  And I’ll love the Yankees forever too!

And  because I’m sharing pictures that make me happy, I have to show you this one too.  My precious friend, Tammy, shared this on my Facebook wall earlier this week because it reminded her of me.  She noted that this artist’s work encompassed two things that I love – bicycles and cupcakes.  She’s so right!  This artist is cycling cross-country with his art!  And yeah…I think I love him.

So no complaints today.  I’m just trying to regain control of my weight-loss and well-being day by day while spending time with people who matter to me.  I plan to enjoy another weekend filled with family and friends, and I hope you enjoy your weekend too.   And don’t forget to enter my giveaway for your chance to win a KitchenAid 5-Speed Blender!  You know…if you want to…I’ll see you Monday!

Inside My Kitchen(Aid)

This has been a long week, and it’s not over.  Food and exercise haven’t been my biggest priority this week, and I won’t be at my weekly weigh-in so it’s really important to eat well today. And, for me, that will start with a healthy breakfast.  Last month, I talked about my new obsession with smoothies and even asked for advice from those of you reading.  And wow!  You had some amazing ideas!

Right now, my favorite smoothie includes a banana, strawberries, kiwi and almonds with skim milk and ice...Yum!

After KitchenAid provided a 5-speed blender for me to review, I started getting creative with my smoothies!  I’ve experimented with strawberries, bananas, blueberries, Uncle Sam Cereal, kiwi, Greek yogurt, kale, spinach, peanut butter, almonds and other fun ingredients.  Don’t worry, I didn’t use them all at once. 😉  I’ve also used my blender to make graham cracker crusts for cheesecakes, pancake batter and freshly ground peanut butter.  It’s easy to use, easy to clean and admittedly a little too much fun…

Fill halfway with water and a drop of dish soap and blend then rinse! Love it!

Having a dependable blender makes it really easy to create a healthy, tasty and convenient meal or snack, and I’m not sure how I lived without it.  I use it everyday – sometimes more than once a day.  And now I’m excited to share a Kitchen Aid 5-speed blender with one of you courtesy of KitchenAid!  You’ll have a few opportunities to enter so check out the details….

Enter to win your own KitchenAid 5-speed blender! 🙂

Here’s What’s Cookin’

The last few days have been filled with questions and uncertainty for me, but I’ve started working through some of it.  I’ll talk about my thoughts/ideas/plans when I’m ready, but today I want to talk about something completely awesome.  I’ve been sharing my thoughts and ideas on eating habits a lot recently, and I’m feeling good about my choices to replace most processed foods with more fresh produce and lean meats (yeah, I’m going to continue eating meat at least for now.)

I feel lighter on my feet and less bloated when I take time to prepare my own meals, and enjoying a home cooked meal makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something.  So as you can imagine, I was thrilled to receive a beautiful 10-piece set of cookware last month courtesy of Calphalon.  And I’m just as excited about what I’m about to tell you!

Calphalon is giving one of my readers a chance to win this 10-piece Calphalon Unison Nonstick Cookware Set which is incredible for a few reasons.  First, the cookware is beautiful, and it’s so easy to use!  I’ve made some beautiful omelets in my 8-inch skillet, and if you know me, you know that’s quite an accomplishment!  I also discovered my love for cabbage when I prepared a fresh vegetable soup in my 8-quart stock pot. And transforming the contents of my refrigerator’s vegetable drawer is so easy in my 4-quart saute pan.  And one feature that I adore is the glass covers with handles that don’t get hot.  That will save more than an accident or two for yours truly. 😉

Cooking with these pots and pans makes me feel like a pro in the kitchen!  And as a health-minded individual, I love this set because I can cook with very little oil (and in some cases no oil)  allowing me to feel satisfied and healthy after my meals!

Now let’s talk about how you can win your own set of Calphalon cookware!  There are a few different ways to enter so you have more than one chance to win.  Here’s how:

  • Check out Calphalon’s website and tell me what’s at the top of your wish list.  I’d love to have one of everything, but at the top of my wish list you’d find this set of knives and this toaster and this slow cooker. You don’t have to list three things, but feel free.  I can tell you that my personal wish list is pretty long! 😉  (one entry)
  • Follow @Calphalon on twitter, and tell them that @alltheweigh says hi! (one entry)
  • Like Calphalon on Facebook, and tell them Kenlie from alltheweigh.com sent you! (one entry)
  • Feel free to say hi to me on Facebook too though you won’t receive an entry for that.  I just like talking to you. 🙂
  • Blog about my giveaway (linking to this post) on your own blog!  Come back and leave a link so I can see it.  (two entries)

You can submit your entries once a day for the duration of the contest, but please leave a separate comment for each entry (one comment for twitter, one comment for facebook, etc.) so I know you did it.  **If you don’t leave separate entries, they will not be counted separately.**

The contest is open to US residents only, and the winner will be chosen at 9pm central time on Wednesday, September 14th.  I’ll announce the winner in Thursday’s blog post. I will contact the winner via e-mail (so make sure you use an authentic e-mail when leaving your comments.)  The winner will have 48 hours to respond with their information, or another winner will be chosen.

I hope you all are as excited about this giveaway as I am! Thanks to Calphalon for making it possible! Now it’s time to enter! Good luck!

Coffee? Tea? Hot Cocoa? All of the Above?

Drinking coffee is not something I do everyday, but over the last couple of months I’ve started drinking iced coffee (if it’s lightly sweetened!)   The only thing that I drink everyday is water though I drink green tea (hot or cold)  pretty regularly so owning a 12-cup coffee pot has never made sense for me.

A Keurig coffee brewer, however, makes a lot of sense because I can brew one cup at a time.  When I learned that I could make iced coffee with the Keurig, I knew that I had to have one!  And I have loved using mine so far!  In addition to looking gorgeous on my counter, it’s perfect for me because it eliminates the need to make an entire pot of coffee! And the dark chocolate hot cocoa is an awesome way to satisfy my sweet tooth at only 60 calories per cup! It also comes in handy when I have friends over because I can offer them a variety of coffee and teas or hot cocoa without any hassle so I was pretty ecstatic when Keurig agreed to give one away to one of my readers.  (Yep, awesome…I know!)

So here’s your opportunity to win a Keurig Platinum Brewing System with an awesome assortment of K-cups courtesy of Keurig, and I’m pretty excited about it!  Seriously folks…I really enjoy sharing the opportunity to win things that I love so here’s what you can do to enter:

  • Leave a comment telling me that you want a new Keurig brewer (one entry)
  • Follow @Keurig on twitter, and tell them @alltheweigh says hi (one entry)
  • Tweet about this giveaway on twitter (one entry *You can do this once daily. Just be sure to leave another comment so I know you did it!*)
  • Like Keurig on Facebook and leave a message on their wall telling them that I sent you. You can also tell me hi on my page, www.facebook.com/alltheweighblog though it’s not required for entry. (one entry)
  • Blog about this giveaway on your own blog (three entries)

**Please keep all entries separate so it’s easier for me to sort through them when it’s time to pick a winner, and don’t forget to enter! You must be 18 years old and US a resident to enter! **

I love my Keurig Platinum Coffee Brewer because it’s pretty, versatile and practical.  They even offer reusable filters to brew  coffee for those who don’t wish to recycle the K-Cups.  I’ll choose a winner next Wednesday, August 3rd, and I’ll notify the winner by e-mail who will then have 48 hours to send me their information.  If I don’t hear from the winner within 48 hours, I’ll choose another winner.

Good luck!

Weigh In For Your Chance To Win

Yesterday I asked you to share your weigh-in habits with me, and many of you weigh yourselves more than I’ve ever dreamed of weighing myself!  I typically weigh-in once a week (though I’m out of town today which means I won’t weigh-in until next Friday) and find myself wanting to step on the scale more and more lately.

One’s relationship with the scale is a tricky thing, but the bottom line is that it’s a basic and necessary tool when the goal is weight-loss.  People tell say “forget the scale” or “lose the scale” or “it’s just a number.”  And while it is just a number, it is monumentally important for me to watch that number go down.

I’m ready to see that number decrease more regularly again in my own life, and I know many of you have the same goal.  And having an accuracte scale that can support my weight plus some is important to me because when I tipped the scales at 400 pounds, it was nearly impossible to find a scale that could accomodate my size.

The good folks at EatSmart understand the value of a durable and accurate scale as much as they understand the value of a healthy lifestyle so they’re going to see to it that one of you receives a new Precision Plus Digital Bathroom Scale!  How cool is that?  And what’s even cooler is that this scale has the capacity to weigh up to 440 lbs.  I love this scale because the display is huge, and it would have worked for me at my heaviest.

Winning is simple, and there are a few ways to do it:

1) Take a look at the Precision Plus Digital Scale here then come back and tell me if you would benefit by owning it!  (one entry)

2) Follow @eatsmartscales on twitter and tell them @alltheweigh says hi! (two entries)

3) Like EatSmart on Facebook and tell them you’re participating in this giveaway.  Feel free to tell me hi on my page too though it’s not required to receive your entry: facebook.com/alltheweighblog (two entries)

4) Blog about this giveaway on your blog.  Feel free to keep it short and sweet.  Just don’t forget to link back to this post! (three entries)

I’ll choose a winner Monday, July 18th, 2011 so weigh-in for your chance to win!

*This contest is open to U.S. residents only.

Who Wants PopChips?!

It is no secret that I  love Popchips.  If you look at my food journal, you’ll see that they pop up pretty frequently on the list of things I eat.  Sometimes my favorite flavor is BBQ…other times it’s Sour Cream and Onion, but there always seems to be a flavor to satisfy my craving.  I take my love of Popchips pretty seriously, see? 😉

Okay..okay..Just kidding...I'll share. =)

The good folks at Popchips have offered to give away a 30-day supply of Popchips to one of my lucky readers so I hope you’re hungry! =)  Seriously folks…the winner is going to receive a big box filled with a variety of flavors!

Here’s what you can do to win:

  • Leave a comment telling me if you’ve ever tried Popchips.  And if you have, tell me your favorite flavor.  (Whether you have or not will not affect your chances of winning. I’m just curious!)
  • Follow @popchips on twitter and tell them @alltheweigh says hi. =)  Then come back and let me know you did it.
  • Like Popchips on Facebook.  (I have a page too so feel free to say hi while you’re there!)  Then come back and let me know you did!
  • Share a link to my giveaway on your blog.  If you do that, make sure you come back and let me know you did it.

There are many ways to win!  I’ll choose a winner on Saturday, July 2nd at 9pm est, and I’ll announce the winner on my blog and contact them via e-mail as well.  The winner will have until Wednesday, July 6th to respond, or I’ll choose another winner!
