Intense Pain, Pretty Nail Polish and Weekend Plans

I’m currently in more pain than I can ever remember being in…ever, and I’ve never felt as weighed down as I do right now. I’m still not the heaviest I’ve ever been, but I feel every pound that I’ve regained over the last few years.

I know that my pain is a direct result of obesity, and I’m disappointed in myself for not taking charge again sooner. I’ve fought hard, but I need to fighter harder…or smarter…or something.I went in again for blood work, and I’m awaiting results from a myriad of tests that they did during my visits. They took blood from my hand, which was odd. I’m glad they’re checking everything, but I’m so ready for relief from the skin stuff I’ve been dealing with for so long.

Skin irritation doesn’t sound particularly bad, but it hurts to stand, drive, lie down, etc. I finished Day 2 of the 10-day prescription, so I’m guessing I’ll start to feel better soon. I definitely hope so.

red OPI polishThankfully, it’s the weekend, and my plan is to stay out of the heat. I don’t usually work on Fridays, but I will get a few things done that I can do from home. I did some cleaning before my shower tonight, so I won’t have to worry about that tomorrow either.

My nails are painted, which always makes me feel good. I’m excited about a few books that I have to read, and Michael will come over for dinner after work.

Saturday I’m having a few friends over to grill on the roof, and the nice thing about the height of my building is that it’s never hot up there. It’s always breezy, and we’ll stay cool in the swimming pool. (Uh, I just rhymed.) It should be an easy weekend, so I’ll have some time to heal.

It’s been a long, physically challenging week, but there’s a lot to be thankful for too. I’m down another 2.6 pounds this week, and I’m thankful for the Weight Watchers meeting I found even if I’m the odd ball. Everyone else is significantly older than I am, which was evident today. I don’t mind though, and I don’t think they do either.

I cannot say it enough. I’m so grateful for my doctor, the medicine and the hope for healing change that seems to be just on the horizon.

 

 

Weekend Wrap-Up

I love weekends, but this one was one of my favorites lately. Friday evening I had dinner and drinks at a place that has been on my list of places to try with stellar company, then I woke up Saturday morning and learned that I won a pair of Kork-Ease boots via instagram from Feet First, a local shoe boutique.

I went in that morning and picked out a pair boots with my friend, Michelle, and she bought a great pair of shoes. After that we spent time at the Riverwalk Outlets in my neighborhood. We ate lunch and spent time looking around at various shops, then I met up with another friend who spent the afternoon on my rooftop with me.

It’s been a while since I took advantage of the rooftop, but the weather in New Orleans is beautiful right now. My neighbors and I were joined by my friend, Alonzo, that evening too.

Sunday morning I didn’t attend church. It’s weird to sleep in on a Sunday, but it felt good today. My long time blog friend, Lynn, came into New Orleans, and it was awesome to finally meet her!

We had lunch at one of my favorite spots in my neighborhood, Domenica. I was sad to learn that they had removed my favorite pizza from the menu until I tried the pumpkin pizza. (I know, it sounds odd, but it was amazing!) The pizza, which was loaded with roasted pumpkin and bacon.

When Lynn and her husband headed to the game, I came home and did a little baking and visiting with my neighbors. We watched the Saints win, which was awesome and long overdue and painted my nails for the second time of the day.

Lynn brought me two sets of holiday Jamberry wraps, and I can’t wait to wear the Halloween wraps later this week. Has anyone else that I know use Jamberry?

Now it’s time to start a new week, and I’m ready for it. A friend from New York is coming in for a few days, and I’m going to get to spend some time with her Wednesday morning. I’m kind of hoping that there’s more fun coming up in the next few days too.

Now it’s time to get the week started, which means that I’m back to limiting the amount of sugar that I consume. I’m definitely going to hone my goals this week and add some new things to the mix. More on that later.

Feeling Frumpy Lately

I’ve always been a firm believer in that we should do our best with what we have.  Even when I weighed 400 pounds I wore dresses often, got manicures and pedicures regularly, took time to blow dry and style my hair and to apply makeup.  I accessorized at my heaviest weight as well.  I am a feminine lady, but lately I’ve been feeling frumpy and plain.

I still dress well some days, but far too often, I find myself wearing yoga pants and a hoodie all day.  When did I decide that was a good idea to go to class, followed by trivia night, looking like I should be at home on my sofa?

I suppose it happened when I put on some weight after the hurricane.  I’ve noticed a decline in the way I dress and feel because I’m a more bloated version of myself than I want to be.  Yes, I was still overweight before that, but the twenty or so pounds I’ve added has made an incredible difference in the way I see myself.

Look, I’m trying to get it under control.  My workouts have been solid, but my eating (actually, drinking) was horrible over the weekend.  I’ve decided that even though I’m having a Mardi Gras party this weekend that I’m going to skip the drinks.  I’ll do some shopping at the end of the week and load up on Pellegrino.  I’d rather be happy when I look in the mirror than feel the buzz of a few drinks.

For me, part of feeling good is feeling well-groomed.  Throwing on a dress, or jeans with a fitted jacket makes me happier all day.  People react to me differently, perhaps because I stand a little straighter and smile a little bigger when I feel like I’ve made an effort with my appearance.

Another thing I’m doing to do to turn this around is spending time on my nails.  They’re always well-manicured, but I haven’t painted them as regularly over the last few months.  Mom gave me an early Valentine’s gift that included several bottles of OPI so I painted them last night.  It’s amazing with a couple of coats of polish can do.

I’m also making an effort to workout before noon so I don’t fall into wearing sweats all day.  I don’t go into an office, and class is casual.  Making an effort anyway makes me feel good so I’m going to continue trying to pull myself out of the rut I’ve been in.

Most of my clothes don’t fit as well as they did, and I refuse to buy bigger sizes.  I just have to work harder to move in the right direction.  I’m happier that way.  I am not going to allow myself to turn into someone frumpy.  I just won’t do it.  It’s time for this phase to be over because I want to feel my best everyday.

To some it would seem that I’m obsessed with nail color, and that might be true.  I did manage to leave the first color on my nails for more than 24 hours even though I’m dying to try all of them.  Now I’m on to the next color…

French Quarter For Your Thoughts by OPI

On a different note, I’ve been an AT&T iPhone customer for years, but I’m considering a switch to Verizon.  I often drop calls and have trouble loading pages on the web. I can’t imagine life without an iPhone so my choices are limited, and I travel pretty often so I need cell phone service that’s dependable everywhere.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on your service.  Which provider do you use?  Are you satisfied with it?

 

 

Lots of Little Things

To say that this week has been a busy one would be an understatement.  I’ve been swamped.  I’m not complaining about it; it’s just a fact.  And in spite of my schedule, I know that it’s my responsibility to make healthy choices.  So instead of letting 48 hours turn into a week, I decided to start making healthy choices at 9:30pm last night.  I did 50 minutes of aerobics, and though I felt totally unmotivated, I’m really glad I did it.

And now that the busiest part of my week is over I have time to do the important things like studying for finals, going to dinner with friends and painting my finger nails.  (What? Isn’t proper nail care important to everyone?!)  After receiving the wonderful OPI package from my lovely friend and fellow blogger it didn’t take long to choose my first color.

I Have A Herring Problem

I chose “I Have A Herring Problem” first because it seems so appropriate for Spring!  And as you might guess, I adore it.  I’m in love with all shades of blue, and this one is sparkly.  Who doesn’t love sparkly nails?!

I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks because there are some fun things coming up!  Tonight is my Weight Watchers meeting, and though I’m not weighing in weekly, I’m going to the meeting with a special delivery from New York for my WW leader.  I can’t say too much because I know she reads my blog from time to time, and I don’t want to ruin the surprise.  It’s a good one. 😉

And next week I’m going to share details about a challenge that I’m really excited about, and I hope you’ll be excited too!  It’s going to be awesome!

Until then, I hope you’re doing something healthy for yourself, and I’ll do the same.  Speaking of which…what’s for lunch?  I’m growing a little tired of Caesar salads at the moment, and I could definitely use some new, healthy, veggie-dense ideas.

As promised, I’m feeling better so I’m back and bubbly for FMM! The weekends always go by so quickly, but mine was productive and filled with family and an awesome thunderstorm. This week, I’m excited to spend more time with my family – even Aunt Janice – who is coming to visit again for a few days before I leave. FMM: Girly Questions

1. Do you like to shop? Yes, I do!  I’ve always liked it, but I started doing it a lot more when I began losing weight.  I think I was transferring my craving for food to craving other things.  Now I’ve settled down a bit, but I still enjoy shopping trips from time to time.  🙂

2. How often do you wear makeup? I typically wear makeup everyday, but I don’t wear it to workout (usually) nor do I feel the need to put it on to run to the store or on days when I I’m just hanging around the house.

3. How do you feel about nail polish? I love it….no really…I love it!  My nail color changes constantly, and I can’t wait to see the new line of fall colors from OPI.  I’m really into blues right now!

4. Do you consider yourself to be a feminist? Yes, I suppose so…I’m old fashioned, in that, I like the idea of a strong, compassionate significant other, but I’m also smart and capable of doing things for myself that no one else can do for me.  And I think girls are smarter than boys. (Just kidding guys…kind of…)

5. What’s your biggest challenge as a woman? Overcoming my insecurities based on ridiculous societal standards or learning to love myself even though I don’t feel pretty.

6. Do you wear skirts and dresses? Or do you prefer something else?  I wear skirts and dresses mostly, and I’m mildly appalled by t-shirts so you won’t see me in them often though I rock the jeans once in a while too.

7. How do you feel about high heels? I wear them..prefer wedges…and can’t wait to lose enough weight to feel good in stilettos (and not break them, of course.)

8. Do you subscribe to magazines? If so, which ones? Well, I’m moving so I don’t subscribe to any now, but once I’m at my new address, I’ll subscribe to Weight Watchers magazine, In Style, Creating Keepsakes and probably a few others…any suggestions?

9. Do you shave your legs/wax/ use depilatory creams or go au naturale? I shave or wax or use Nair.  My skin is always smooth though my method changes…

10. What do you like most about being a woman? Overall, I enjoy it.  I’m stereotypical in my love of baking, crafting, knitting, and caring for others…and that makes me happy.
