Back Home from California

Last week I went to California. I started my trip in San Francisco, and it was immediately evident that I’ve come a long way since September. When I step on the scale it always feels like it’s not moving fast enough, but I’m getting smaller, moving better and enjoying life more fully. That means more to me than a number on the scale every could, so I’m pleased with my progress.

I met up with my dear friend, Leslie, in California, and we didn’t take an Uber even one time throughout our days in San Francisco. We walked up and down hills to go to dinner, to go shopping and see everything we saw. We spent the day (well, two days) at Nieman Marcus, and I was tired by the end of the day. I wasn’t exhausted though, and that was such a cool feeling.

We ate lunch at The Rotunda inside Neiman’s, and the lobster was delicious. The popovers with strawberry butter were just as delicious as i remembered, and they brought me back to the time when I lived in New York. I loved that experience, but I’m so happy where I am now. Who knew that a popover could bring me to such an awesome realization? Ha

When I arrived in Pebble Beach, where I would spend the next few days, I walked along the beach from Monterey to Pacific Grove. The scenery was so gorgeous that I didn’t realize how far I had walked until Leslie drove from home to pick me up. I remember how hard it was to complete the Saints 5k on flat land several months ago, but this time, even though I was wearing boots, I felt so spectacular that I felt brave enough to climb on rocks. I wish I could have gotten better pictures to show how far out I was on the rocks, but a selfie was the best I could do since I was out there alone.

 

It’s hard to explain how different I feel, and I’m thankful for that because I felt pretty rough in the weeks following my surgery. I don’t think I’ll ever forget how difficult it was to be so miserable, but that’s okay. It helps me remember how far I’ve come, and it encourages me to keep moving forward. Did I mention that I climbed around on rocks while overlooking the ocean? I wouldn’t have done that six months ago, so it’s a big deal to me.

Now that I’m home again I’m feeling pumped up. As fun as it is to go on an adventure it’s even more fun to return home to my fiancé, my friends and the life I’ve created here in New Orleans. That’s a great feeling too, by the way.

I started trying on clothes this morning, and everything was so big that it’s time to clean out my closet. There’s a giant pile of clothes on my bed now, so I’m going to sort through it and figure out what to keep, what to give away and what to toss. Michael and I will be married 3 months from today, so it’s time to start making some space for him too. He’s going to move in with me, at least until my our lease is up, so we’ll have adequate time to find our next home.

I’m working on some big goals that I’ll discuss in an upcoming blog post, and I’m thankful that I’ve finally found an exercise groove again. Life is pretty good right now, and I’m excited about what the next few months will bring.

Three Months and 68 Pounds

I had surgery three months ago yesterday, and I’m down 68 pounds since I started my pre-op, liquids phase. It seems like weight-loss is different for everyone, but I’m happy with my progress so far. 

Right now, I can eat one whole egg with part of a piece of toast, or I can eat about 1/4 of a small bowl of Pho. (That’s the only way I enjoy beef. It just takes too much effort to eat it now.) I can also eat about 2 ounces of chicken or pork in one meal, and one string cheese is enough to keep my full for a few hours.

I drink ISO 100 because I like it more than ISOpure. I also drink peanut butter Quest protein shakes with Fair Life milk. Drinking protein is the easiest way to ensure that I reach my daily protein goals. I can also drink sparkling water again too, which is awesome.

This year was easily the best holiday season I’ve ever had. I spent the week with family, got engaged, rode a train up Pike’s Peak and introduced Michael to my favorite people and one of my favorite places. I couldn’t have asked for more.

 

On Christmas Eve we dined at my sister’s house, and we spent Christmas evening at the home of her in-laws, who moved to Colorado recently. We had delicious food both nights, and even though I served myself tiny portions, I wasn’t able to try everything. There was so much food that I couldn’t even taste a lot of it.

It was hard to sit at the table while everyone else continued eating, but it was one of those rare moments when I didn’t push my plate away. I didn’t continue to either though. I just sat and enjoyed the company while reminding myself that if I ate too much I’d be uncomfortable. I don’t like getting to that point, so I try to avoid it.

I wished I could eat more than I did during those two meals, but when I got home and stepped on the scale I remembered that it’s worth it. I wasn’t able to try everything prepared for each of those meals, but by eating such limited portions I was able to lose several pounds over Christmas. That’s pretty cool.

We did some walking while I was there too. Michael proposed to me on a short hike with my mom, sister and brother-in-law, and we went for walks around the neighborhood with my sister because the weather was so awesome. It was cold and blistery outside, but I love that. 

There’s something about being in Colorado that makes me want to be more active. Maybe it’s the 315 days of sunshine that they see every year. Maybe it’s the crisp, clean air. Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve dropped a fairly significant amount of weight since the last time I was there. (I know that was a factor.) Regardless of the reasons, I felt lighter on my feet and more active than I have in the last few years, and it was great. I’ll be there again in the Spring, and I wonder if I’ll feel even lighter and more active than I did on this trip.

These adjustments to life after weight-loss surgery haven’t been easy for me, but I’m happy to see and feel the changes in my body. It feels like I’m making some big, positive strides, which definitely makes it all worth it to enjoy a longer healthier life with my family and friends and my future husband.

Hello, 36…

The last couple of weeks have been incredibly busy, but in a good way. Tonight I actually made it home just as the sun was going down, which allowed me to cook dinner and catch up on The Mindy Project. Does anyone here watch it? It’s definitely my favorite show right now! Suits comes on again next week too, so I’ll have a few things to watch in my free time.

friendsYesterday was my birthday, and it was easily the best one I’ve had so far. I can identify a few reasons for that.

My friends and co-workers made a big deal about it (because they know how much it means to me.) My boss, who has become a close friend, booked a private karaoke room at a sushi bar over the weekend. Um, does she know me or what? I love to sing, and I love sushi. Put me in a room filled with friends, and that makes for a pretty perfect night. I’ve never been in a room full of people who love to sing karaoke as much or more than I do. It was awesome. We need a reason, any reason, to do that again soon. (As you can see I took a few selfies that night, but most of us forgot to take pictures because we were having so much fun.)

Earlier that day my boyfriend and I spent the day with my mom at her house. We ate lunch, played board games and relaxed. I love being close enough to Mom that I can see her often, and I’m really glad she likes my guy. It usually takes her a while to like who I’m dating, but she liked this guy right away. He’s a gentleman. He treats me really well, and she sees it. What’s not to like?

I started my day in church on Sunday, and after that my aforementioned boyfriend and I went to a BBQ with about 50 of our friends. We drove into the country to spend the afternoon and evening at a friend’s farm, and a few of our men put on quite a fireworks display.

Monday I slept in, went shopping with my good friend, Michelle, then went to a dinner party with friends. We never got around to playing board games, but we all had great time. I met a guy who went to the same church I went to in Oklahoma at the same time I was there. He was so familiar to me, and it didn’t take long to figure out why. Tell me the world isn’t small…I just won’t believe you. 😉

Cafe Dumonde New OrleansTuesday, which was my actual birthday, was fun because when I got into work I got flowers from a sweet friend and co-worker and friend. My boss, who’s also one of the most awesome people I know, brought me flowers and a bag of beignets from Cafe Dumonde.

I didn’t do much tracking in my Weight Watchers app this week, but that changes today. It’s hard to stay in the tracking mindset when you’re distracted, but life is busy. I need to make it a bigger priority, so I will now.  I managed to lose weight while my sister and nieces were here, and I kept it under control for the most part throughout the last week.

Michael KorsI’ll go to the meeting tomorrow, but I won’t weigh in because my feet are . It’s not painful or anything, but I’m definitely carrying extra water weight. I know it’s just a number, but I don’t want to feel like the progress I’ve made is gone – not even temporarily. because my feet are so incredibly swollen. I’m drinking water, but not enough. My Hyrdroflask goes everywhere with me, but I need to fill it up a few more times a day.

 

In addition to my swelling feet I’m having some painful skin irritation issues. I mean, my skin hurts. This is one of the unfortunate effects of being plus-size in New Orleans during the overbearing heat of Summer. It’s hard to exercise because right now it hurts to move, but the only way this will ever go away is if I lose weight and have excess skin removed. It’s frustrating, but it’s reality. Now would be the perfect time to find a primary care doctor, but I still haven’t attempted to do that.

I’ve had a stellar week, but I’m looking forward to the quiet time that Friday brings. My favorite thing about Fridays is the time I spend alone reading and praying in the morning. I think it’s important to pray and read everyday, but I like the habit of quiet,  uninterrupted time that I’ve developed over the last several months. I’ll also do some grocery shopping, and maybe I’ll even make time for some arts and crafts.

There’s a lot going on in my life, but it’s mostly good stuff. I’m happy, and I’m moving in a positive direction. I took it easy this week because I’ve been in so much pain, but I’m looking forward to doing some cardio this weekend. I’ll probably give myself one more rest day.

My Family Is Arriving Today!

There are few things I enjoy more than spending time with my family, and I’m so excited to see my sister and nieces later today! They’re flying in, so I’m taking some time off from work to spend with them.

We have a full list of activities planned, and there are some new places on the list that I can’t wait to show them!

My goal is to continue tracking my food intake while they’re here and to exercise at least 3 times during the week they’re here. We tend to do a lot of walking because we always visit the aquarium, the zoo, City Park and more.

I’m so grateful that Mom and I will get to spend the week doing fun things with them, and I can’t wait for their plane to land!

Friend Makin’ Mondays: All About Family

This long weekend was all about family for me, so naturally, FMM is going to be all about family too.

All About Family

1. How many siblings do you have? Tell us about them. I have one sister. She’s a teacher, and she’s married to a cool guy. They have two daughters, who just happen to be my favorite little people in the world.
2. Do you have kids? If so, how many? Nope, but I have two awesome nieces. I adore them!
3. Share one thing you love about each of your parents. My mom would do anything for me, and she requires nothing in return…ever. Dad and I don’t always agree politically, but it’s a lot of fun to talk about it with them.
4. How close do you live to your nearest relative? I live about an hour and a half from my mom, which is awesome.
5. Does your family have any particular traditions that you’d hate to miss? If so, what are they? I just enjoy being around my family, so I take every opportunity I can to spend time with them.
6. Share an odd fact about your childhood. When I was really young we lived in Louisiana, but I didn’t grow up there. We traveled across Lake Pontchartrain to visit family, and for a while I had a recurring dream about trees quickly growing up from the water and snakes dangling from them. I also thought the lake was loaded with sharks.
7. Did you have pets when you were growing up? Do you have any now? If so, tell us about them. I had kittens, and I even had a dog once as a kid. I’d love to have another cocker spaniel, but my home and lifestyle just aren’t conducive to it. Many people around me do it, but I plan to wait until I no longer live in a high-rise building.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: The Basics

  1. How often do you make your bed? I make it everyday as a general rule. I do make exceptions  a few times a year, usually when I’m not feeling well.
  2. What are you currently reading? Well, there are a few books on my iPad that I keep meaning to read, but I do read the Bible most days. I read through it last year, and I’m doing it again. I like reading it because it familiarizes me with God’s character over and over.
  3. Do you go to bed at a certain time? If so, what time? I’ve gotten pretty good at going to bed around midnight, and some nights I sleep even earlier than that. That’s a huge accomplishment for this recovering night owl.
  4. What are your favorite TV shows currently? Suits is still one of my favorites. I also love Younger on TV Land. I still watch Scandal, but I find myself wondering why each week.
  5. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve eaten lately? I guess I’d have to say crawfish. It’s not considered weird here in New Orleans, but it’s not common in the other places I’ve lived.
  6. Do you have any trips planned? If so, where are you going next? My next trip will probably be to Colorado. It’s been several months since I was last there, and I miss my family big time! I also have a few local-ish trips in the works. The next one will probably be Pensacola.
  7. How many cups of coffee do you drink per day? If you’re not a coffee drinker, what you do prefer? I’ve never been a morning coffee drinker, but I started drinking a cup or two a day when I arrived at work. I went a few weeks without drinking it at all, but I had one big cup of iced coffee over the weekend. I got a punch card at Dunkin’ Donuts that gives me a free coffee every Monday in April, so who am I kidding? I’m totally having it today too.
  8. It’s Saturday night, and you decided to stay in? What do you do to entertain yourself? (We’re talking hobbies, interests, etc.) If I’m alone I like to spend that time reading, singing and/or painting my nails. I did those things over the weekend.
  9. When you give a gift do you wrap it, or do you put it in a gift bag? I typically gift wrap. I l only bag if I’m in a hurry because bagging it makes it look like you were in a hurry. To each their own, but for me, no…just no…
  10. Share one thing from last week that made you smile? I could list several different things here, but I’ll share one about my boss. He couldn’t be more handsome and charming, and after lunch with my colleagues I had to walk to my car in the rain. My umbrella had broken on my way in, and he knew it. On our way out he walked me to go my car, and he got soaked so I’d stay dry under his umbrella. He’s a great boss, but moments like that remind me that he’s also a just a great person.

Do You Have Anything To Add To My New Orleans Adventure List?

I met a tall, handsome and seemingly friendly guy over the weekend who (unintentionally) helped me see that I’ve been missing some of the best things my little city has to offer.

He talked about taking me to Dorignac’s, a local grocery store that has practically everything, a big Asian market on the West Bank, the king cake festival that’s coming up in my neighborhood, day trips to fun places and more.

We talked about politics and a variety of other things as well, and he made me realize that while I love my life, there’s a lot more to enjoy. I have no idea if I will hear from him again or enjoy any of them with him, but he unknowingly inspired me to make a list of things that I want to do in and around my city in 2016.

Here’s my list in no particular order:

Go to Dorignac’s (because people who know seem to think it’s the best.) While I’m at it, I should check out the new Fresh Market that opened across the street. I’ve been wanting to do that.
Explore City Park, and relax on one of the many giant swings. I’ve done this; I just want to do it more often.

Visit the WW2 Museum. I honestly cannot believe I’ve never been there. It’s walking distance from my home, and WW2 has always personally been the most compelling part of American History. I can still remember walking through concentration camps in Germany wondering how anyone was ever strong enough to endure those places.

Take a ride on the Creole Queen. During my walk yesterday I stopped to watch the boat depart, and I realized that I wished I was on it. I’ve never really even considered taking a ride down the river, which is silly because that was one of my favorite things about New York City when I lived there. The difference here is that I don’t think I’d take a sail on the roughest, deepest part of the Mississippi River! I’ll take the paddle boat instead.

Drive to Mississippi to eat barbecue at The Shed. I’ve been hearing how great this places since I moved here, and I love BBQ!

Enjoy an early morning or afternoon at the Lakefront. It’s beautiful over there! How on earth have I managed to skip that?

Eat King Cake at Sucre. I’ve done this once, but you can only do it for a little while each year. I should probably do it again because I love it. I’d love to go to the king cake festival too, but I don’t mind going to Sucre by myself. I preferred to go to the festival with good company.
Drive to Baton Rouge to buy Lush Cosmetics. Okay, I do this occasionally, but I think I need to do it more often. I’m seriously obsessed with bubble bars and bath bombs.

Ride a street car. I’ve never done it. They pass down my street, yet I’ve never done it.

Visit the Insectarium. I know it’s weird, but I want to see what it’s all about. I might even taste a bug just to say to myself that I did. In New Orleans, we eat crawfish, which are really just mud bugs so…

Go to Oak Alley Plantation. I was there over a decade ago, but I don’t remember much about it. I’d love to go there now.

Go to a Mardi Gras parade. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I kind of want to walk down to the street during Muses and maybe a few others too. I’d definitely enjoy this one more with a tall, strong bodyguard, but we’ll see how I feel in the next week or two.

Walk down Royal Street in the French Quarter…just because it’s pretty (and nothing like Bourbon St., which is mostly awful.) I do this sometimes, but it’s been quite a while since the last time.

Eat crawfish (either at my favorite seafood restaurant, or on my rooftop. Actually, I’d like to do both.) I didn’t eat much crawfish last year, but I’m hoping to enjoy it more this year.

Drink a cafe au lait at Cafe Du Monde. I tend to do this when friends and family visit from out of town, but I like it. Why not do it more often?

I’m sure there’s a lot more to add to the list, but this feels like a good start. I’m not sure which one I’ll do first, but I’ll do a few of these in the next week. I’ll document it on Instagram too, of course.

An Update On My January Goals and More…

I can’t believe it’s already February, but I’m happy to report that I accomplished the goals I set for January. One goal was to refrain from all desserts/sweets for 21 days, and I did it. Sugar is like air to me, at least it feels that way sometimes, but I didn’t cave. I used the times in which I craved desserts to pray and to read my Bible. It may sound silly to some, but I drew closer to God during that time. It was awesome. I felt so empowered by my actions that I’ll make a similar goal for February.

I accomplished another goal as well; I lost 10 pounds in the month of January. I may have lost a little more than that because I reached the goal last week. I won’t step on the scale again until next Monday. I can’t express how awesome it feels to be moving in the right direction, and it feels good to have several weeks of control under my belt. My doughnut-free streak continues as well, and I need to buy new jeans as a result. I love that.

Dad arrived in New Orleans today, and I’m so happy that he will be spending the week with me. I had planned to go and see him during Mardi Gras, but I’m so happy that he’s here instead!

He met me at Starbucks because I was there most of the afternoon. The weather was nice enough to sit through a conference call outside, but it quickly turned cool. I tutored at City Greens, a farm-to-table restaurant next door, ate fruit, drank too much coffee and lots of water, and waited for him to arrive.

I haven’t seen him since April. (I seriously refuse to go that long without seeing him again.) We went to Ulta, where we found some makeup deals. (“We” being me, but thanks for being a good sport, Dad! Ha)  I got two Laura Geller sets that included two bottles of primer, two foundation powders, two brushes, mascara, blush and brightener, and concealer. The bottle of concealer typically costs more than the entire package, which made it feel like a no-brainer.

After that we went to dinner at one of my favorite spots, then dropped my car off for an oil change at the dealership. (That worked out well because he won’t have to pay $49 a night to park, which is what they raise the prices to when events like Mardi Gras are about to happen.)

Dad was exhausted after his day of travel, so I finished up my work for the day while he went to sleep. I typically do not allow myself to bring my laptop to bed, but I made an exception tonight.

It was a productive day, and I got a lot accomplished tonight as well. Now it’s time to get some sleep because I plan to enjoy as much time with Dad as I can. Most other things will be secondary this week.

Tomorrow morning I’m going to make buttermilk biscuits, eggs, and bacon for Dad and friends, and I’m so happy that he will be seeing and meeting people who mean so much to me.

If you live far from your family, you know how it feels. I’m just so glad he’s here…

Unexpected Things

Last week I represented PlusInc at an airline conference in Washington, D.C., and it was an honor to speak to airline executives, on behalf of plus-size people.  You can read all about it here.

For years I’ve had a love-hate relationship with our nation’s capital, but this time I fell in love with it.  Looking back it seems as though every time I tried to enjoy the day as a tourist in D.C., something would either go wrong or distract me from my plans, but this trip was different.

This time I didn’t break any bones and spend the day in the emergency room, nor did I spend all day and night swooning over a man who never fails to make me feel sexy and awesome. (I might have done that if he hadn’t been out of town on business in Chicago.)  I spoke at the conference, went out with a cool guy who treated me to one of the best burgers in D.C., spent time with Brandon (who is one of my favorite people on the entire planet,) went to dinner with an awesome and inspirational friend and visited with executives who were interested in hearing what they could do to make air travel better for people of size.

When the conference was over and Brandon left, I decided to take a walk down to the White House.  I hadn’t been there in about two years, and there’s something magical about being at the home of the most powerful person in the free world.  I nerd out for it every time.

The White House was about a mile from my hotel, and it was about another mile to the Lincoln Memorial (which is easily my favorite spot in the city.)  I stopped in front of the White House to take a photo, of course, and a few minutes later I stopped by the Washington Monument to post it on Facebook.

When I opened the app, I saw a message from someone who used to mean the world to me.  She was a close friend when I lived in New York, and our relationship suffered because I couldn’t be honest with her.  I’ve talked about this many times on my blog.  She doesn’t have a blog, nor are we connected online.  She just sent a message that said, “Hey, are you in front of the White House?”

She was there visiting from New York with her husband and saw me, but I didn’t see or hear her because I was wearing headphones and listening to Maroon 5’s latest album (which is awesome, by the way.)  I walked back up Constitution, and I can’t tell you how amazing it was to hug her.  I apologized for being a piece of crap, and we walked to the Lincoln Memorial together.  In some ways, it felt like ages since I last saw her (almost 4 years ago,) and in some ways it felt like yesterday.

I don’t know if we’ll ever be friends again, but it was so good to spend time with her.  It felt as though something in my heart was mended that day, and it felt good to say ‘I’m sorry’ in person.

My trip, which included stops in Boston and New York as well, was one of the best I’ve experienced in recent memory.  I’m thankful that I had the opportunity to cultivate change and to be surrounded by close friends and inspirational game-changers. Now I’m back in New Orleans, and I’m looking forward to fall and all of the good things that come with it.
